editorial profile:

We’re lucky to live in a region with so many fine brew pubs. And while most of them offer great beer and a fun-loving atmosphere, there are a handful whose warm, neighborly attitude set them apart as Extra Special destinations. Rubicon Brewing Company is one such brew pub. Snuggled into a compact space on Capitol Avenue, shoulder-to-shoulder with the acclaimed The Waterboy restaurant, Rubicon has carved out a distinct personality in midtown Sacramento’s dining (and drinking) landscape. The pub has a loyal following of beer-loving regulars, who flock to the friendly bar area and outdoor patio most nights of the week. And who could blame them? The beer is first-rate, from the smooth-drinking, malty Amber to the refreshing Monkey Knife Fight Pale Ale, and the tiny kitchen cranks out a number of beer-friendly menu items to keep everybody thirsty and happy. There’s a fine selection of burgers, including the creative Bayou Burger, covered with spicy Cajun seasonings and crumbled blue cheese; and you can’t go wrong with the hefty chicken “parmajoe” sandwich (breaded chicken breast slathered with marinara sauce and topped with melted provolone cheese). The waffle-shaped fries are greasy and salty, the perfect accompaniment to the brewmaster’s crisp Czech Pilsner, and if you’re looking for something a little fancier, try the grilled pork tenderloin dinner, served up with sautéed onions, apples and dried cranberries. The Rubicon also offers a tasty breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays for early-morning, ambitious types. — Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: Beer aficionados should order the Rubicon’s “sampler” portions. For $1.25, you can try a 5-ounce portion of one of the pub’s brews—a popular way, we’re told, to ascertain your favorite style.
