editorial profile:

Located in the pretty Land Park neighborhood of downtown Sacramento, Riverside Clubhouse is an enduringly popular restaurant. The busy kitchen offers lunch and dinner daily and breakfast on weekends, focusing on a solid menu of American classics, from blueberry sour cream pancakes and a lavish Cobb salad to clam chowder and buffalo meatloaf. Beautifully and creatively designed, the restaurant features two very unique fireplaces—don’t miss the one located in the stylish lounge area, where flickering yellow flames leap curiously out of a pile of glittering blue crystals. The other, a tri-level fireplace, is located on the back patio area, and is filled with quirky metal sculptures. Also on the patio (which is a great place to dine) is a stunning, wall-length waterfall, especially fascinating for children, who love to touch the rushing water. The walls of the restaurant are covered with large, colorful paintings of the Land Park neighborhood, and the rounded bar is a particularly convivial spot for an impromptu—and sometimes crowded—meal. Briskly-selling items include the shrimp po’ boy, a toasted roll stuffed with popcorn shrimp, shredded lettuce, and a spicy sherry remoulade sauce; and the very messy but deliciously refreshing mahi mahi fish tacos, piled with chunks of grilled fish, cotija cheese, and a peppy lime-avocado cream. Also popular are the extremely rich lobster ravioli and the slow-roasted baby back ribs, drenched in an espresso barbecue sauce. The restaurant offers a large selection of small plates, and many patrons like to build their meal around these items. If you save room for dessert, order up one of Riverside’s Brown Cow milkshakes, a very adult indulgence prepared from vanilla ice cream, brandy and Crème de Cacao. — Kira O’Donnell
