editorial profile:
If you’re longing for an Italian holiday but can’t quite get away, a visit to Piatti restaurant in the swanky Pavilions shopping center can certainly take the edge off. An enduring favorite on the Fair Oaks dining corridor, Piatti attracts well-heeled shoppers, business power-lunchers and doe-eyed couples seeking a dose of romantic nibbling. The bar scene is usually lively in the evenings, with garrulous singles coyly snatching glances at each other while colorful cocktails are served up by a congenial bartender. The interior is liltingly Mediterranean, with rustic, tiled floors, mustard-colored walls and large, colorful Italian pottery and plants scattered attractively throughout the restaurant. Big windows invite the sun in and the back of the restaurant is dominated by the chef’s line, where patrons can observe the expert flipping, chopping and grilling of menu items. The best part of the meal may be at the beginning, when the waiter plunks down a ramekin filled with “Piatti oil,” surely the yummiest bread-dunk you’ll ever taste. This ambrosial concoction is a mixture of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, fresh parsley, red pepper flakes and, the kicker, chopped fresh (yes, fresh) garlic. If you ingest the oil, be prepared to scare away any potential kissing partners for at least two days. (Our advice? Make sure your date eats some, too.) Piatti’s power zone is pasta (absolutely don’t miss the delectable saffron pappardelle, tossed with shrimp, diced tomatoes and tangy arugula leaves in a white wine-butter sauce) and thin-crust pizzas, but the kitchen also puts out very tasty fish dishes. (If salmon is on the menu, order it.) If you’re a small plate aficionado, you’ll love Piatti’s great selection of antipasti and side dishes—we recommend the fagioli (slow cooked Romano beans) and the bursting-with-sunshine bruschetta (roughly chopped tomatoes mixed with basil and olive oil, piled on thin, toasted bread slices). If you manage to save room for dessert, plunge into a sweetly refreshing affogato—creamy vanilla gelato smothered in espresso, toasted almonds and bits of candied orange. — Kira O'Donnell
Insider tip: If you visit Piatti on a Friday night, request a table outside on the patio so you can enjoy the restaurant’s featured weekly live jazz group.
