editorial profile:

Sacramentans love their sushi. Most downtown Japanese restaurants are thronged at lunch, and Nishiki is no exception. Located on busy 16th Street, Nishiki is a great spot to visit when you’re on the clock. Servers are efficient and the food seems to come out as fast as your order it. The modest-sized sushi bar at the front of the restaurant looks directly onto Nishiki’s elaborate seafood tank, where a number of creatures (soon to be someone’s meal) crawl about and provide visual entertainment for sushi-gobblers. Further back in this bustling restaurant you’ll find a sea of booths, whose sides are so high they provide a fun feeling of privacy for diners. Creative, colorful rolls are the focus at Nishiki, and include such yummy options as the “Rock ‘N Roll,” stuffed with shrimp tempura, avocado, tuna and salmon and topped with spicy tomato sauce; and the intriguing Monarch roll—mildly spicy assorted fish in a soybean wrap, deep-fried and served with miso sauce. However, there’s also a great selection of non-sushi items, like the kitchen’s earthy, rib-sticking beef udon soup, crammed with thinly-sliced meat, plump noodles and chunks of shiitake mushrooms; and the “chef’s special” spicy salmon, which is battered, lightly fried and drizzled with a spicy crab glaze. The restaurant also offers an economically-priced “combination box” at lunch and dinner for folks who have a hard time deciding on just one menu item. — Kira O'Donnell
