editorial profile:
It’s always an uplifting experience to visit Morgan’s Central Valley Bistro, housed in
downtown Sacramento’s gorgeous Sheraton Grand hotel. The restaurant is located on the second floor in a completely open, airy atrium, flooded with light from numerous windows and a huge skylight in the ceiling. Healthy plants and potted trees flourish in this cheery environment, and colorful artwork is scattered throughout the space. The restaurant features crisp white tablecloths and nattily-attired waiters, and it all adds up to a decidedly upbeat dining ambience. If you happen to arrive for breakfast (served every day, with a special buffet on the weekends), you’ll have choices ranging from the crunchy, earthily delicious whole wheat waffle and hearty corned beef hash to a “healthy alternative” egg white omelet. The lunch menu is dominated by a great selection of salads and sandwiches (try the Kobe beef steak sandwich with horseradish mayonnaise) with a handful of intriguing-sounding appetizers such as the pecan-dusted crispy calamari. At dinner, tables are set with candles and the atmosphere becomes nice and romantic, perfect for Champagne-sipping and flirting. Start your evening off with the chef’s Dungeness crab cake appetizer, served with a red pepper butter emulsion; or the herb gnocchi, made from ricotta cheese, mushrooms and butternut squash. If you’re hankering for some greens before your entrée, check out the lovely poached pear salad (with Maytag blue cheese and candied pecans). Dinners include a pan-seared Chilean sea bass with fennel risotto; red wine-braised short ribs; and a roasted Petaluma chicken breast, served with “new potato” mash. You don’t need a hotel room to enjoy a dining experience at this attractive downtown restaurant. — Kira O'Donnell

" I had the most delicious dinner I have had in years. The wine list complimented the cuisine and offered many selection that matched my pocket book inspiring me to try a new wine. WOW! It was the Melville Pinot Noir and they paired that with the Pork chop and Sea Bass. We actually started off with thier poached pear salad and the Proscuitto di Parma Bloomsdale spinach salad that were incredible with a glass of Mumms Champagne - Delicious. The flavors on everything were right on and the portions were generous. I loved the Creme Brulee and my husband had the truffle torte. I tried that truffle torte too and it was rich. A great experience and great flavors. Best kept secret in town but I had to share. Enjoy your dinner folks; you won't be disappointed. "
