It’s always rewarding to discover delicious food in an unlikely location, and Mehran is no exception. Located in a strangely angled building (the entrance is located at the back, and it’s hard to see), Mehran is plunked modestly next to the swanky Pavilions shopping center on Fair Oaks Boulevard. This interesting family-owned restaurant, which does a lot of local catering, is definitely worth seeking out if you enjoy Indian and Pakistani cuisine. Though the menu is compact, you’ll have no problem selecting something that sounds tantalizing. Try the superb Chicken Tikka Masala, napped in a voluptuous, meaty cream sauce, or the unusual Karahi Gosht, goat cooked with tomatoes, green chilis and fresh ginger. There’s a nice selection of vegetarian dishes, from the Bhindi Masala—okra with onions, tomatoes, and Pakistani spices—to the fiery Palak Paneer, spinach curry cooked with housemade cheese. The naan, a pillowy and satisfying bread, is an important component to your meal at Mehran, as it helps you to swipe up every last drop of the kitchen’s complex sauces. Don’t miss the garlic and cilantro-flecked naan— it’ll keep the vampires away for days. And while we don’t often associate Indian cuisine with desserts, Mehran has an intriguing line-up for its customers, including a basmati rice pudding called keer that’s flavored with pistachios, almonds and raisins, and the Gajjar Ka Halwa—shredded carrots cooked with almonds. — Kira O'Donnell
