editorial profile:

One of downtown Sacramento’s hidden dining gems, tranquil Lotus restaurant is located in the courtyard of the Wong Center (often referred to as “Chinatown Mall”) across from the Downtown Plaza. You may have to wander around a bit before you find it, but this small family-owned establishment is well worth the effort. Known for its authentically prepared Thai and Vietnamese cuisine, Lotus’ food seems to pack more heat into its dishes than many I have tried in the region—their “spice scale” (located on the back of the menu) runs from medium to “suffering hot.” Flavors are clean and fresh, and menu items are presented simply. The curries are outstanding—don’t miss the complex gang keaw, custardy chunks of Asian eggplant, mushrooms and basil leaves stewed in a just-barely sweet green curry sauce; and the gang ped dang, bamboo shoots, strips of red bell pepper and basil submerged in a coconutty red curry sauce. The restaurant offers a handful of “specialties,” from the popular pineapple fried rice to the banh xeo, Vietnamese crepes stuffed with prawns, mung beans and bean sprouts; and there’s also an exciting selection of appetizers for diners who like to nibble. The restaurant is plainly decorated, with forest green walls and a well-worn carpet. Clean and quiet, it can feel a bit subterranean during the day, as the lighting is dim, but in the evening that translates into a nice and cozy ambience. If you’re coming for lunch, arrive before noon or you’ll have to jostle for a table —this is a popular spot for downtown business folks. — Kira O'Donnell
