Kru is a smartly decorated Japanese restaurant with an imaginative menu that offers tasty appetizers, traditional favorites and main entrées that fuse global flavors. The centerpiece of Kru is a cozy sushi bar that is often filled with diners bearing chopsticks and slurping on chilled plum wine. The dining room is stylishly set against a black and red backdrop and tables twinkle with tiny tea lights. The menu has a small plates selection with dishes such as asparagus tempura, duo of ribs (lamb ribs and grilled hamachi ribs) and scallops and foie gras. For a full-size main course, try the charred rack of lamb or the customary chicken teriyaki that comes with enough chicken to feed the table. Specialty rolls such as the Cindy roll (tuna, snow crab and jalapeños) or the Aden (tempura veggies topped with avocado and sweet chili) are favorites. The menu uses seasonal produce, fish and meats to give the Japanese menu a laid-back California feeling. Cindy Arora
