editorial profile:

If having a really good breakfast is important to you, hop in the car and make the drive to Auburn. There you’ll find teeny Katrina’s Café, wedged in next to a Honda motorcycle dealership on a frontage road off Highway 49. After a hearty breakfast at Katrina’s, you may be tempted to relocate to Auburn (unless you’re lucky enough to live there already). This captivating little restaurant nurtures body and soul, with fabulous food and one of the cheeriest, most welcoming restaurant environments in the region. At Katrina’s, babies are tickled affectionately under the chin, elderly folks are helped graciously into their chairs, and every customer that walks through the door is rewarded with a big sunny grin. This is just a feel-good place, and people flock to Katrina’s to seek out this nourishing experience. The menu is long and interesting, with items like the date-walnut French toast and chili con carne omelette that are sure to get your day moving in the right direction. Try Katrina's excellent, chunky and housemade corned beef hash, and the Tuscan scramble—grilled rosemary-potato bread topped with scrambled eggs, goat cheese, sun-dried tomatoes and pesto. There are several varieties of quiches from which to choose, and a great selection of pancakes—do not miss the delicate lemon-yogurt pancake, which comes rolled up like a blintz and is sprinkled with powdered sugar. I have been known to drive to Auburn for these pancakes; they’re that good. Other delectable menu items include a stick-to-your-ribs chicken fried steak, and the “Avocado Delight” omelette, encasing loads of bacon and chunks of avocado, tomato and sautéed onion, with just enough cheddar cheese to pull all the favors together. After dining, I guarantee you will walk out with a full, happy belly and a bouncy spring to your step. — Kira O'Donnell
