editorial profile:

Once in a while, it’s good to veer from the familiar and explore the cuisines of different cultures. If your weekly meatloaf and pepperoni pizza are starting to give you the blues, check out Kathmandu Kitchen in Davis. Specializing in Indian and Nepalese cuisine, friendly Kathmandu has a raft of interesting, very tasty options for folks seeking a dining adventure. If you like lots of variety, the best time to visit is lunch, when the restaurant offers a bountiful buffet for $8.99 a person. Come hungry, and you can load up on the richly flavored goat (yes, goat!) curry, the fabulous alu kauli ko tarkari (potatoes and cauliflower cooked with fresh tomatoes, green peas, cilantro, roasted cumin and coriander), fiery tandoori chicken legs, and saag chana masala (fresh spinach and garbanzo beans cooked with herbs and spices). This is a great place for vegetarians, as the non-meat entrée list is very extensive; and there’s also a huge selection of appetizers, from the aromatic alu tikki (deep-fried stuffed potato patties sautéed with ginger, garlic, onion, and roasted cumin powder) to the traditional Nepalese “momos,” steamed dumplings stuffed with chicken and served with a housemade tomato achar (pickle). And if your sweet tooth is crying out for some satisfaction, try the kitchen’s kheer—rice that’s been cooked with milk, cashews, coconuts, dates, cardamom and saffron. Kathmandu offers several raised, cozy booths in the front of the restaurant, and a more spacious dining area in the back that’s dominated by a large red brick fireplace. Colorful artwork adorns the walls and the restaurant has a lively, efficient vibe that you’ll find energizing. If Davis seems too far to drive for this dining adventure, there’s also Kathmandu Kitchens located in downtown Sacramento and Auburn. — Kira O'Donnell
