editorial profile:

If you’re used to the bubbly and colorful freneticism of sushi restaurants like Mikuni¬—or the gracious, hushed “our-food-is-art” sushi restaurants like Momiji—then Kamon restaurant may take you by surprise. Located in a gritty business strip on 16th street, Kamon has a slightly dour ambience that a young, urban crowd may find appealing. A dimly lit and well-worn space, the restaurant is flanked by a no-frills bar that diners can spy through a window in a wall that divides the two. Kamon’s sushi bar is modestly sized, and chances are—if you arrive on a busy night—you’ll end up at a table because the bar is full. Just make sure you’re not seated in the no-man’s-land of the far dining room, which cuts customers off visually from the rest of the restaurant—it’s sort of like dining in a shoe box. The brightest spot of warmth in this stark space is the waitstaff, who brim with friendliness and make customers feel very welcome. There are several menu items for which the restaurant is known—one is the curious “Fire Cracker” appetizer, tofu skins stuffed with spicy tuna, then breaded and deep fried and served festooned with several colorful sauces; and the popular “Wasabi Shu-Mai,” crunchy fried shrimp dumplings—perfect with a big gulp of warm sake. We thoroughly enjoyed the very crusty, hot pile of chicken katsu (breaded, deep-fried strips of chicken)—originally ordered for the kids but consumed enthusiastically by all; and a tasty sushi roll called the “Rocky Roll,” stuffed with shrimp tempura and crab salad, topped with avocado slices and a couple of non descript creamy sauces. Next time I visit, I’ll go for one of the kitchen’s noodle dishes, such as the beef yakisoba (pan-fried noodles and vegetables with beef) or the udon, noodles in a savory soup broth with your choice of meat (or tempura) with vegetables. If you can, save room for dessert—the mochi ice cream is delightful. — Kira O'Donnell
