editorial profile:
As you wind your way around Otto Circle, surrounded by large, commercial buildings in this no-frills industrial business park, it’s easy to imagine you’ve made a wrong turn somewhere. No restaurant could possibly exist in such a neighborhood. And, yet, one does, and it’s been an irresistible dining magnet for the region’s barbecue lovers for two decades. J.R.’s Texas Bar-B-Que, which serves up some of the most succulent, smoky meat you’ll ever encounter, is the place to visit when you’ve got a craving for ribs and beef brisket (and hot links and potato salad). This warehouse-style restaurant, filled with wooden picnic tables and decorated with old hay bales and rustic cowboy accoutrements (there’s even a stagecoach in the back of the dining area) is well worth the confusion you’ll experience trying to locate it. J.R.’s menu is pretty straightforward, and there are concessions for non-barbecue eaters (though I can’t imagine why they would visit in the first place), kindly offering up items like a grilled cheese sandwich, a chicken salad and a hamburger, but don’t you dare order them—instead, go for the restaurant’s deservedly famous beef brisket, far more tender and moist than your mom’s ever was. The massive beef ribs and smaller pork ribs are also fantastic, with chewy-crackly exteriors cradling super-moist interiors. Other meat selections include the smoky-throughout, fall-off-the bone chicken and pork shoulder. J.R.’s offers three different barbecue sauces in which you can dunk your meaty treasures—sweet, spicy, and the original—so that each customer can choose the one he/she likes the best. All barbecue plates come with a choice of two side dishes, which range from a very crumbly cornbread and macaroni salad to onion rings. Our favorite sides include the peppery (and not sweet) “cowboy” beans and the bright yellow, very satisfying potato salad. If you’re a dessert eater, you’ll consciously have to make yourself stop eating your meat if you want to try J.R.’s simple, creamy sweet potato pie or the popular peach cobbler. Portions are huge, the food is great, and J.R.’s staff aims to please—this is truly a regional dining treasure. — Kira O'Donnell
