editorial profile:
Friendly and earnest, Jalapeños restaurant serves up hearty plates of inexpensive, no-frills Mexican cuisine. Especially popular at lunchtime, the tiny restaurant offers both an indoor and outdoor dining area in which to enjoy your quesadillas, chile verde and crispy taquitos. Menu items I have tried recently have all tasted fresh and bright (note: the kitchen does not use lard), and while the presentation isn’t fancy, it’s good solid food you can count on. Many people visit Jalapeños for the restaurant’s popular breakfast burritos (breakfast is served all day)—if you’re bleary-eyed and ravenous, don’t miss the “super burrito,” packed with steak, eggs, potatoes, beans and diced jalapeño peppers. Other recommended items include the soft, pliable tacos, filled with the meat of your choice and sprinkled with chopped white onions and cilantro; and the light and refreshing shrimp fajita salad. Bring your canine buddy—he’ll enjoy hanging out with you on the plant-festooned outdoor patio. — Kira O'Donnell
Insider tip: Jalapeños kindly offers several hamburgers for folks not interested in Mexican cuisine.
