editorial profile:

Feeling glum? Head out to Islands restaurant in Roseville for a Cool Breeze smoothie (made with coconut cream, bananas and strawberries) and one of the kitchen’s tasty salads, burgers or appetizers. Festive as can be, Islands catapults you into another latitude with its surfboard-inspired, varnished tables, South Pacific wooden masks leering goofily from the walls, and the charming bar area, covered with a thatched, tropical roof that will make you wish you were clad in your favorite bikini. This is a boisterous and colorful spot for families, business colleagues that want to get to know each other in a fun atmosphere, and you and your clutch of sports buddies. If all you want to do is belly up to the cheery bar area and nosh with your freshly-pulled brew or tropical cocktail, order up the Beachside Sliders (four mini burgers on tasted buns with seasoned red onion strings) or the thigh-enhancing spinach and artichoke dip. But if you’re ready to fuel up for the evening, tuck into the restaurant’s fantastic soft tacos (I recommend the Cabo Loco tacos, filled with super-tender seasoned pork, caramelized onions and a zesty cilantro-chili sauce) or the huge Kaanapali Kobb salad. Burgers are always popular at Islands (don’t miss the Kilauea, with its jalapeno and black pepper-crusted patty) and if your tummy is still growling after your meal, order up the Kona pie—mocha almond fudge ice cream packed in a cookie crust, topped with chocolate fudge, whipped cream and roasted almonds. — Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: The economical kids’ “Gremmie” menu (for “surfers 12 & under”) includes a quesadilla, all-beef hot dog and “tiki tenders” served up with a drink and fries (or applesauce and carrots).
