The beauty—and—downfall of many chain restaurants is consistency. While food is reliable, creativity can be skimped on for the sake of maintaining the standard. But Il Fornaio—the successful chain restaurant imported from Italy—ponies up both. The downtown Sacramento location with sweeping ivory-colored walls, velvety curtains, crown moulding and a lively happy hour has been a pillar for pasta, since its opening 13 years ago. The menu offers a spattering of seafood, meat, and pasta dishes that have Italian flavors and imagination. There’s the polenta pasticciata appetizer (polenta topped with Italian sausage), the popular cappellacci di zucca pasta (ravioli filled with butternut squash and walnuts) and the petto di pollo entrée (grilled chicken marinated with sage, rosemary and served with roasted fingerling potatoes). Chef and partner Ezio Gamba also creates daily specials for lunch and dinner. Don’t let parking deter you from checking out Il Fornaio. Park in the Wells Fargo Center and get validated.
