editorial profile:

A young lady of 6 I know refers to the Hoppy Brewing Company as the “happy, smiley-faced place,” and I can’t think of a more apt description. Not only is the brewpub’s logo a big, beaming yellow sun, but a dining experience at Hoppy can definitely inspire felicitous thoughts. It’s not only the cheery, mustard yellow walls, and the groovy ’70s-inspired mural hanging over the bar, it’s the tasty beer and satisfied beer drinkers that keep the place hopping and positive. There’s a great variety of housebrewed beer, from the robust, caramely Stony Face Red Ale and subtle, nutty Hoppy Face Amber Ale to the citrusy, wake-up-your-palate Liquid Sunshine Blonde Ale, and the best way to try them all is to—well, try them all. Yes, just order yourself a beer sampler (3 ounces of every beer for $6.25) and settle in with a happy—or is that hoppy?—sigh. You’ll want some victuals to accompany the brew, and I suggest the fiery, gloriously greasy and finger-licking Buffalo wings as a starter. You can’t go wrong with the yummy hot turkey club sandwich (served on sourdough) or the grilled portabella mushroom sandwich, topped with melted Jack cheese, chilies, and roasted red peppers. Other restaurant specialties are the Hoppy Burger, which diners can embellish with all sorts of interesting ingredients (like pineapple, jalapeño aioli and Cajun spices) and the giant beer-battered onion rings. If you’re a brunch-eater, check out the country-fried steak and eggs and “Hop Cakes,” available on Saturdays and Sundays. Hoppy’s often-bustling dining area is divided from the bar by a chest-high wood divider, and a large HD TV dominates one corner of the space, fronted by comfy couches for customers eschewing the restaurant’s chairs and bar stools. It all adds up to a pretty convivial environment, and a family-friendly one at that. — Kira O'Donnell
