editorial profile:

Located in Granite Bay’s Quarry Pond shopping center, elegant Hawks Restaurant has raised the bar for fine dining in Placer County. Owned by a young, energetic couple—married chefs from the San Francisco Bay Area—the restaurant offers its guests a menu that is thoughtfully restrained and seasonally appropriate. Ingredients are, whenever possible, sourced locally, and their evident freshness and flavor shine in the kitchen’s menu items, especially in the ravishing salads. (Don’t miss the young farm greens salad, flanked by a duo of cleverly deviled quail eggs perched atop crunchy croutons.) Entrées range from a moist Niman Ranch pork chop, scattered with chunks of caramelized apples and cipollini onions, to a crisply, deeply seared Alaskan halibut resting atop soft butter beans and tender grilled artichokes. The menu changes seasonally, however, and it’s always a good idea to check the restaurant’s website for an updated version. The restaurant has its own sommelier who guides guests in the sometimes confusing wine-pairing process, and it’s imperative that you save room for dessert—Hawks’ has one of the best dessert lists in the region.

Diners will be soothed by the restaurant’s clean, precise lines. Walls are a restful grey-blue and flat brown, hung with black and white photos of local farmscapes, and striking white orchids are placed on crisp white tablecloths. In the warmer months, diners can take advantage of the restaurant’s patio dining, which includes not only a lovely view of Quarry Pond but a vibrant, splashy water fountain. - Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: Hawks’ hamburger is fabulous: Thick, salty-peppery and enormous, it arrives on a house-baked bun with extra-crispy French fries.

" A few things must first be noted about Hawks restaurant. First, they have been open only a very short period of time. Second, the ambience is exceptional. It is obvious that the restaurant has been financed for the long haul. This is very good news, because the quality of the cuisine is exceptional. The chef's are very eager to please, and the prep work is evident. This restaurant is lovely and worth every penny. One note: to the diner that compared this bit of heaven to P. Martins American Bistro your comparison is almost funny. Chain food compared to Hawks? Please adjust your palate or just dine at places where the actual food is irrelevant. Hawks is a blessing. "

" We have eaten at many fine establishments in the Greater Sacramento Area over many years, but this was one of the most elegant experiences we have had in a long time. As my subject line reads, decor to dessert, there we no misses. There was no need to look for a wait person, water glasses always filled, bread always replaced, very attentive wait staff without being in the way. The food was wonderful from beginning to end, wine list is fairly complete. We glady paid the $20. corkage for the bottles we brought in. They will comp a bottle for every one you buy off their list. We will definitely be going back and recommending to all of our friends. "

Big disappointment for a pricey lunch

" My husband and I had lunch today at Hawks. I had crabcakes entree and he had petrale sole. Both entrees could be described as petite. In addition my crabcakes were literally devoid of any flavor. My husband's entree was about 4 ounces of petrale sole on a large bed of spinach. Both entrees were at the top of the price point for lunch. This does not deserve a return visit even though we live in the area. Don't make a special trip. "
