editorial profile:

Offering a delightful mix of cuisines, Harry’s is a much-loved midtown hole-in-the-wall. If you visit in the morning, you’ll be served up big portions of the restaurant’s famous (and American) breakfast items, from the charbroiled chicken omelet and “meat lover’s skillet” (country-fried potatoes topped with diced ham, bacon and sausage, then smothered with melted cheddar cheese) to the French toast and pancake combo. There’s even a deep-fried chicken waffle sandwich for intrepid diners not concerned with calorie counting. But, as morning becomes afternoon, Harry’s menu morphs into a curious jumble of Chinese (Szechwan eggplant shrimp), Vietnamese (rare steak and beef ball pho) and American (basil cheeseburger) dishes. The menu is astoundingly long for such a small restaurant (I counted five tables in the teeny space), but Harry’s does a brisk business in to-go orders. Despite the length of the menu, food seems to fly out of the kitchen quickly, and the items we sampled sparkled with freshness and good flavor. Try the wonderful barbecue pork chow fun, with its velvety-soft wide noodles and sweetish strips of meat; or the popular garlic green bean shrimp, served over rice. On a cold, blustery day, go for one of Harry’s many soups (he even offers a “cold or flu” chicken vegetable soup for his under-the-weather customers) or the kitchen’s baby back ribs. If you’re going out to eat with an eclectic group of diners, Harry’s will fit the bill nicely. — Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: Harry’s “low carb” Asian rolls include a Spam roll and a scrambled egg roll
