editorial profile:
Long treasured as one of Sacramento’s best nightclubs, Harlow’s on J Street also happens to offer up an eclectic and very appealing dinner menu. One of the best-kept dining secrets in downtown is that no one thinks to eat at Harlow’s early in the evening (the kitchen opens at 6pm, but the live shows don’t normally start until 8-10 p.m.), so the sultry, dimly lit space is quiet and very romantic. Tiny tables flank the establishment’s dance floor, but ask for one of the cozy banquettes against the far wall—private and roomy, they’re the perfect spot to snuggle close with your sweetie. Run your hand along Harlow’s curiously textured far wall, whose sculpted wave pattern, lit by bright red LED lights, creates a stunning visual experience when entering the nightclub; and, (after half a bottle of wine or several Long Island Iced teas), the shimmering, rotating dots on the drapery drawn around the stage (from the hanging disco bulb above) can be a mesmerizing experience. With the place practically to yourselves, enjoy the attentiveness of the staff and tuck into a leisurely meal. Harlow’s appetizers range from a plateful of meaty Asian potstickers, served with a hot mustard aioli; to a grilled haloumi cheese (a Turkish goat cheese) accompanied by roasted tomatoes and garlic. The kitchen cranks out some very tasty pizzas. Try the delicious wild mushroom pizza, with caramelized onions and mozzarella cheese; and first-rate entrees include a huge black peppercorn-crusted “bistro filet,” with a yummy, creamy pile of mashed potatoes. Other customer favorites are the hefty seafood burger and the grilled chicken pasta, with peppers, tomatoes, olives and onions. Come for the food, and stay for the show—Harlow’s offers a vibrant lineup of terrific performers. — Kira O'Donnell
