editorial profile:

This East Sacramento Japanese restaurant is quiet, sedate and well-loved by neighborhood foodies. Its tiny sushi bar has just a few seats—the majority of diners sit at tables and order from the distracted but kindly waitstaff. The most striking design feature in the restaurant is a series of white, lit screens, behind which grow plants whose haunting, beautiful shapes glow through, lending a magical air to the space. White fabric squares hang gently from the ceilings, walls are wood paneled, and patrons have the sense of entering a more exotic and gracious world than what lies outside the door. Hana Tsubaki’s ambience bears no resemblance to the frenetic, party-like environment many diners experience at Sacramento’s large, popular sushi restaurants—and the focus here is less on sushi and more on the restaurant’s well-regarded Japanese entrées. Try, for example, the fantastic gyoza nabe, a soup-like entrée that features a large bowl filled with plump gyoza dumplings, savory broth, soft cabbage and a raft of delicious vegetables; or the unbelievably crispy, moist chicken katsu, deep-fried chicken cutlets served with a sweetish, thick sauce. The kitchen’s surprisingly ungreasy tempura is another winner, as is the simple, pleasing beef teriyaki. If you’re craving a sushi roll, try the mouth-tingling “Firestarter,” a roll containing spicy tuna, topped with more slices of tuna, chopped green onion and a spattering of fiery hot sauce. Hana Tsubaki would be a nice venue for a first date or a dinner where conversation is important—and while children are respectfully attended to, their energetic antics can be disruptive in such a quiet, dignified environment. Our advice? Leave the kids at home with a babysitter and come for a peaceful dinner for two. — Kira O'Donnell
