In the Food Lover’s Companion, Mongolian grill is defined as “audience participation cooking originated during the time of Genghis Khan.” Which, truthfully, is a great vision (warriors and all) to conjure up when preparing a personalized bowl of stir-fry meats and veggies at the Great Wall on Howe Avenue. The popular dining spot is in a shopping center—in the Arden/ Arcade area—also home to a plethora of other ethnic eateries. Great Wall is simple, not a lot of glitz, no dress code, no white tablecloths or daily specials and there’s actually one thing on the menu: All you can eat Mongolian barbecue. Diners line up and pick from a “salad-bar” area that holds containers of frozen meats, such as lamb, chicken, beef and turkey. It also has rows and rows of fresh-cut vegetables and seasonings that you pile high in your bowl. It has a decent selection of sauces, hot spices and fiery pastes to add an extra kick. Service is friendly and efficient at Great Wall, but don’t forget to tip the cook who prepares your food with the help of a big stick. Cindy Arora
