editorial profile:
A great breakfast can set the tone for your whole day. What could be better than starting out a sunny Saturday with a belly full of mushroom omelet, syrup-soaked flapjacks or a bowl of banana-studded oatmeal? These items—and many more—are available with a big dose of good cheer and efficiency at old-town Rocklin’s Granite Rock Grill. This no-nonsense, warehouse-like restaurant has worn green floral carpets, blue vinyl-upholstered tables and red plastic water glasses, and it serves up some of the tastiest breakfasts in Placer County. Check out Granite Rock’s curious (and enormous) mural of a gold miner and his trusty mule as you chow down on the kitchen’s Sausalito scramble (fresh spinach, bacon, mushrooms, croutons—yes, croutons—scrambled with eggs and sprinkled with blue cheese crumbles) or the fabulous taco omelet (with spicy ground beef, tomatoes, onions, olives and Jack and cheddar cheeses, plus guacamole), so big and hearty that I didn’t eat anything for the rest of the day after devouring it for breakfast. Other morning specialties include the homemade corned beef hash and stuffed French toast. If you do sleep in, however, and stumble in for lunch, you won’t be disappointed. Try one of the restaurant’s comforting meatloaf sandwiches or a foot-long all-beef hot dog, served open-faced with housemade chili, cheddar cheese and lots of onions to wake up that palate. There’s even a “low carbohydrate lover” section of the menu, including items such as a chicken-apple sausage with a garden salad; and a “veggie skillet,” a tumble of freshly sautéed vegetables with hot pepper-Jack cheese. Kids are warmly welcomed at Granite Rock, where they will be coddled by waitresses and provided with Etch-A-Sketches—don’t forget to order them a cocoa, whose whipped cream garnish reaches precariously toward the ceiling. — Kira O'Donnell
Insider tip: If you love onion rings, order a batch of Granite Rock’s famous homemade (and hand-dipped) rings.
