editorial profile:

The beauty of a small neighborhood restaurant like Gönül’s (pronounced like funnels) is the feeling you are somehow a part of it. Short of suggesting you get up and pour a glass of wine from the kitchen, this east Sacramento restaurant exudes an informal charm with its butter cream painted walls, jars of housemade jam for sale and pleasant outdoor patio with bright flowers accenting each table. The menu is a hybrid of Californian and Mediterranean cuisine, with dishes such as tabulleh salad, house favorite cremini mushroom pasta and lahmajun (a Turkish cheeseless pizza) that’s made with beef, lamb, tomatoes, lemon and herbs. A lengthy wine list—created by the owner’s husband—includes handpicked wines from California wineries and a few imports. Also, many of the spices and herbs used in the entrées are directly from owner’s home garden. Owned by Gönül and Mitch Blum, this is a hands-on restaurant, which makes for a great neighbor. " The food is interesting and good, but the service was horrible. The waiter poured the wine while holding a glass in one hand and the bottle in the other, and then proceeded to fill the glass entirely to the top. Besides that, she was slow, forgot our order and had to ask again, and then tried to give someone in our party the bill while they were going into the bathroom. "

I Dream of Gonul's!

" I absolutely loved everything about this restaurant! I am so tired of eating at chains that are all the same, same fake decore, same boring menu and same people. Gonul's was the most excellent meal I have had in a very long time. I found the decore to be warm and cozy. The service was excellent. Our server constantly came back to check on us and make sure we had everything we needed. The food...was MARVELOUS! We started with warm bread and a garlicky oil dipping sauce. Followed by a Turkish Antipasto plate that consisted of freshly made pitas and warm, spicy hummus and olives. I had a kabob plate that was OUT OF THIS WORLD, grilled veggies and lamb served over couscous. My date had a creamy mushroom sauce with homemade sausage served over pasta. The owner/chef came out and talked to us and told us that most of the ingredients come fresh from her garden. Now, here's my personal incite: You can tell a lot about a place by the condition of the bathrooms...which were impeccably clean and fresh. Fresh cut heirloom roses on the bathroom sink and candles burning. If you're looking for a quaint, quiet place where food and romance exist...you've found it! "
