editorial profile:
Established in 1939, Frank Fat’s is downtown Sacramento’s oldest restaurant. Still operated by the descendants of gregarious and talented Frank Fat, the family’s dynasty has expanded over the years into Old Sacramento, Roseville, Folsom, two California Indian casinos and even operates a restaurant in San Diego. A long-time favorite of the capital city’s political crowd, Fat’s is always packed at lunch, and it seems every well-heeled patron in this gorgeously decorated restaurant is talking business of one kind or another. With its dim interior, scarlet ceiling and black, sparkly granite tabletops, there is no other restaurant in town that delivers the same smoldering, exotic ambience. Chinese screens with writhing dragons, framed golden sculptures and blandly grinning Buddha heads grace the walls, and there are even a handful of private, romantic booths for folks who want to avoid distractions. Don’t miss Fats’ famous pot stickers, plump and meaty and grilled to produce a crispy, delicious exterior. Served with fiery chili oil and red wine vinegar, they are some of the tastiest pot stickers in the region. Other recommended items include the fatty but finger-licking-good garlic Korean beef short ribs and the succulent chicken and asparagus stir-fry. The restaurant is well known for its steaks—wildly popular is the Frank’s Style New York Steak, piled high with softly sautéed onions—and the Fat's brandy-fried chicken, redolent of ginger and garlic. This is Chinese cuisine at its most sophisticated and elegant, and a restaurant certainly worth a visit—not only because of its rich history, but the quality of its food. — Kira O'Donnell
Insider tip: With a day’s notice, Fats’ chefs will prepare, dress and cook fresh wild game brought in by customers. The meat needs to be received 48 hours before the customers’ dining reservation time. This includes wild ducks, doves, pheasants and geese, as well as larger game such as elk and deer.
