Folsomites seeking an exotic location for their next meal should check out glamorous Fat’s Asia Bistro on Iron Point Road. This beautiful, airy restaurant looks like a movie set, with tall palm trees “growing” (they’re “preserved” real trees, so not technically alive) from the shiny floors and an enormous golden Buddha, sitting atop a water fountain, holding court over the main dining room. Colorful, mosaic-tiled columns add further allure, and wispy, broccoli-colored drapes, utilized as gentle room dividers, soften the ambience. Sitting at the black tables in faux-rattan chairs, you feel as if you’ve been plopped in the middle of an Indiana Jones film. The menu is—as you might imagine—focused on Asian cuisine, and ranges from an Indonesian spicy pork and Chinese Shanghai noodles to a Thai chicken satay, served with a fiery curry-peanut sauce. Don’t miss an opportunity to gobble some of the restaurant’s wonderful dim sum, like the dainty, translucent shrimp har gow (steamed shrimp dumpling) or the earthy pork shu mei (steamed pork-filled dumpling), bursting with delicious meaty, mushroomy aromas. The kitchen also puts out a very crispy panko-crusted calamari (with a surprising pimento-horseradish sauce), and non-meat-eaters will relish the asparagus and three mushroom (button, straw and shiitake) stir fry. This is an exciting, diverse menu, and one that should please even the pickiest eaters at your table. — Kira O'Donnell
