editorial profile:

Most of us associate the Fat family’s name with sophisticated Chinese and Asian cuisine, but the family also owns a charming restaurant in Old Sacramento with a decidedly Californian—and eclectic—twist. Fat City Bar & Cafe, located at the corner of Front and J streets, offers visitors an intriguing slice of local history. The space in which it resides was built in the late 1840s and served for many years as a general store. The Fat Family restored the exterior of the building to its original 1849 appearance when it took over the space, and the interior boasts an enormous, carved wood bar, constructed in 1876, that was imported by railway from Colorado. Tiffany-style, old-fashioned lamps hang from the ceiling, which is adorned with a stunning stained glass circular art piece called the “Purple Lady,” which won first prize at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Tall, gracious windows invite patrons to gaze out onto the wooden sidewalks and buildings of Old Sacramento, and rustic brick walls and a stamped-tin ceiling lend a sense of solidity and history. And while you will find some Asian touches on the menu, such as a popular Chinese Chicken salad and a simple chicken and vegetable stir-fry, the restaurant’s cuisine is grounded in traditional American dishes with a few adventurous forays into international cuisine. With such a diverse menu, it’s easy to find something appealing, from the housemade chunky steak chili, served with freshly-baked cornbread, to the feisty Cajun pasta, bathed in a spicy cream sauce with hunks of chicken, thinly-sliced sausage and fat shrimp. Mexican food aficionados will appreciate the kitchen’s blackened ahi tostada, and there’s a nice selection of burgers and sandwiches. (Try the barbecued, pulled-pork sandwich, piled with grilled onions and smoked cheddar cheese.) Restaurant “specialities” include chicken pot pie and a roasted, maple-glazed pork loin, drizzled with an apple-mustard demi-glace. Fat City also offers brunch on Saturday and Sunday—bring the kids: they’ll love the Belgian waffle, served with cinnamon butter and lots of maple syrup. — Kira O'Donnell
