The pastry case at Ettore’s Bakery and Café is a palette of pastels with a bright green princess cake, white chocolate mousse crowned with red strawberries and row after row of colorful petit fours. This is not the place to doggedly stick to your diet, but rather, to dive fork first into a bed of rum-soaked ladyfingers. Ettore’s along Fair Oaks Boulevard is a sweet and busy Sacramento staple filled with regulars who lounge in the outdoor patio with a mug of coffee and a slow-roasted pulled pork sandwich. The lunch menu is made-to-order pizzas, soups, salads and sandwiches such as a sage roasted turkey on a whole-wheat roll or its classic ceasar that can be topped with grilled prawns. If you come by for a sweet, try the super popular chocolate chewy—a meringue cookie with walnuts and cocoa powder—which people have adopted as a low-fat cookie because it is made with egg whites.
