editorial profile:

When you’ve had a boring day and the stack of files sitting in front of you makes you want to cry, head out to the Elephant Bar, conveniently located across the street from Arden Fair Mall. It’s easy to banish those glum thoughts when you enter this zany restaurant, whose completely over-the-top African animal theme makes for a festive dining experience. Leopard print carpets, giraffe-patterned walls and an enormous elephant head sprouting out of the wall behind the hostess stand all contribute to the exuberant ambience of this popular establishment, whose corporate website promises to deliver a food experience that “comes charging into your life like a bull elephant.” I can’t say that the restaurant’s menu items bowled me over quite the way the website predicts, but the ones we sampled certainly were very satisfactory. There is quite a range of dishes from which to choose (“a taste safari through exotic destinations,” suggests the corporate website), drawing inspiration from a number of the world’s cuisines. Appetizers range from a “quick-fried” soy-ginger calamari to hand-breaded chicken tenders, which all nicely complement the frisky lineup of exotic cocktails with which your waiter will attempt to ply you, regardless of the time of day. The menu offers an attractive section of “Pacific Rim Specialties,” including a briskly selling Bangkok stir-fried pad Thai with vegetables and tofu; and a tasty, generously portioned stir-fried sesame chicken. The hefty pile of shrimp and chicken jambalaya we ordered for lunch was quite good, though somewhat bland, and we’re told the macadamia nut-crusted fish and chips and “Kona” barbecued pork ribs are consistent customer faves. Desserts are as grandiose as the decorating theme, so be prepared to share. Choices include a hot apple-blueberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream and a “colossal” New York cheesecake. We devoured an elephant-sized fudge-fudge walnut brownie, a yummy treat I would recommend for any sweet-tooth on a dining safari. — Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: Customers 10 and younger can order from a globally-inspired kids menu. All items are $4.50 or under and include a beverage and ice cream sundae.
