editorial profile:

Fancy it ain’t, but if you’re looking for a good, solid breakfast served up quickly by pleasant, efficient folks, Eggie’s fits the bill nicely. This no-frills establishment offers a roomy counter with swivel seats, bouncy booths and gritty views of the restaurant’s parking lot and traffic flashing by on Fulton Avenue. It also happens to have an enormous and creative selection of breakfast items—far more interesting than your average diner. From the indulgent Monte Cristo (sliced ham, turkey breast and American and Swiss cheeses sandwiched between two thick slices of powdered French toast) and the spicy crab scramble to the corned beef Benedict, Eggies’ menu gives you an opportunity to veer off the beaten breakfast path. I like the restaurant’s “South of the Border” section, offering items such as the huevos con chorizo and hefty “Santa Fe Jose,” eggs scrambled with sausage, green chiles and pico de gallo sauce and topped with an eye-popping amount of cheddar cheese; and the list of omelettes is also pretty astounding. (Try the “Applejack,” stuffed with chicken-apple sausage, mushrooms, green onions, tomato and Monterey Jack cheese.) Kids will adore the fresh strawberry waffle (lavished with a mountain of whipped cream) and the chocolate chip pancakes. Best known for its breakfasts, the diner also packs ’em in for lunch: popular items include the Buffalo chicken sandwich and the cowboy burger (a 1/3-pounder topped with cheddar cheese, bacon, fried onions and barbecue sauce). — Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: Reeealy hungry? Order up the “Ultimate Breakfast,” which includes three eggs, the meat of your choice, hash browns or home fries, and pancakes, a waffle or French toast.
