editorial profile:
A number of creperies have popped up in the Sacramento region in the past few years. But the undisputed doyenne of creperie establishments is Danielle’s, located in the Arden Town Center off Fair Oaks Boulevard. Established in 1984, Danielle’s is a very popular breakfast spot, especially on the weekends, though they also do a brisk lunch and dinner business. If you like to sit outside, you’ll enjoy the restaurant’s lovely brick-enclosed patio dining area. Inside, the space is decorated with an ever-changing selection of artwork, which is always fun to look at while you wait for your meal. A skylight provides a cheery bright atmosphere, and while tables are crammed fairly close together, the ambience is energetic and convivial. Crepes are the name of the game at this bustling restaurant, and range from savory treasures like the ham and artichoke crepe, and beef Bourguignon crepe (beef, mushrooms, carrots and onions in a red wine sauce with melted Swiss cheese) to delightful dessert crepes. If you want to indulge, try the luscious fresh blueberry crepe, folded into a crusty-soft shell with sweet cream; or the pear “mélange” crepe, filled with pears, walnuts, and brandy-stewed raisins and topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. But there is far more than just crepes at Danielle’s—the French onion soup is a huge seller (try a small bowl before leaping into your creamy Coq Breton crepe) and there’s also a great selection of sandwiches and salads. (We like the “Salade Niçoise,” made with chicken instead of the traditional tuna.) Other recommended dishes include the healthy and surprisingly filling oven-roasted vegetable plate and the ham and spinach quiche. — Kira O'Donnell
Insider tip: Vegetarians will be thrilled with the non-meat crepe selections—popular ones include the broccoli, mushroom and gouda crepe; and the French-inspired ratatouille crepe, stuffed with a lovely array of sautéed vegetables and Swiss cheese.
