editorial profile:

There are certain restaurants that seem to capture the spirit of the city in which they are located. Crepeville, which sits on a tree-lined, shady stretch of old-town Davis, is definitely that kind of restaurant. Mellow, extremely friendly and quality-focused, Crepeville is the kind of place you visit when you need a pick-me-up and a kind word. There’s even a pile of eclectic reading material by the door, should you decide to camp a while, sip on an espresso drink and close out the world. Obviously, crepes are the focus at Crepeville, though the kitchen also offers up quite a variety of sandwiches and egg dishes. Vegetarians will be giddy when they see the non-meat selections—how about some smoked tofu or a grilled eggplant sandwich to accompany that frothy strawberry crepe? Breakfast is a big deal here, and when you see the chunky, crispy-brown country potatoes, you’ll know why. Popular breakfast fare ranges from a “Midtown Benedict” (poached eggs over sliced tomatoes and avocado on English muffins—with Hollandaise sauce, of course) to fruit-topped French toast and a “South-of-the-Border” egg scramble. But, if you’re going to visit in the afternoon or evening, order a crepe. There’s one for virtually any palate, from a fragrant chicken pesto crepe to a “Florentine” (cheddar cheese, onions, spinach and cottage cheese) and a “Hawaiian” (ham and pineapple—with brown sugar and soy sauce—are the main ingredients). You know you want dessert, so splurge on a banana-chocolate or apple-caramel crepe—comforting and warm, it’s sure to contribute a welcoming bit of sweetness to your day. — Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: Crepeville’s outdoor dining patio is lovely and shady. Arrive early to snatch a seat before it fills up.
