editorial profile:

Friendly Country Waffles restaurant is difficult to distinguish from many other roadside diners you may have encountered in the past. With its stiff, multipage menu (filled with color photographs of menu items), bouncy booths and wallpaper that reminds you of Grandma’s house, the establishment doesn’t feel much different than a Denny’s or IHOP. However, the comforting sounds of hot coffee being poured into mugs, waitresses walking past in squeaky shoes and children crowing over strawberry waffles are reason enough to enjoy restaurants like County Waffles. There’s no “artisan” food here, but the kitchen plates up robust portions of All-American breakfast and lunch items that are sure to keep their customers (and their bellies) smiling. We recently worked through one of Country Waffles’ puffy, extravagant omelets, filled with bacon, spinach, mushrooms and Monterey Jack cheese; and a Country Burger (with fries) I tried was as good as any other I’ve eaten at a similar establishment. The restaurant’s claim to fame, of course, is its waffles—there are some wonderful flavors from which to choose, including peanut butter and banana, cinnamon apple, and blueberry—and we saw a number being delivered to happy patrons. There’s also a nice selection of Swedish crepes (there’s even a crepe and waffle combo!) and egg scrambles for the early risers. If you’re visiting for lunch, menu items range from an old fashioned meat loaf and several salads to a number of nourishing sounding sandwiches. (Try the Philly Beef San—a Parmesan-toasted French roll piled with roast beef, sautéed onions and bell peppers with melted Swiss cheese.) It’s not a fancy place, but I bet you’ll be satisfied. — Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: Country Waffles offers separate menu prices for seniors—“for folks with 60 years experience”—including French toast for $4.50 and a hot turkey or hot beef sandwich plate (with mashed potatoes and gravy) for $5.95.
