editorial profile:

Sacramento is full of mom and pop burger joints where you can go to fuel up and get your recommended daily intake of calories in a single meal. Many are indistinguishable from each other in quality and ambience, but shabby Cookie’s in East Sacramento happens to stand apart from the crowd. It’s the little things that make the difference at Cookie’s—the first-rate, tasty buns, so much better than the big box-store variety; the fact that they offer (the very popular) ostrich and buffalo burgers in addition to their more traditional selections, and the captivating list of “slushies” and “frosties,” refreshing, icy beverages (flavors range from coconut and cherry to oreo and blackberry) designed to deliciously combat the withering heat of Sacramento’s summer. You can either order through the window and sit outside, or find a seat inside, which feels a bit like a large broom closet, with cracked plastic-upholstered seats and a yellowed menu hanging on the wall. Cookie’s burger embellishments include barbecue sauce, bacon, guacamole and mushrooms, and there’s also a list of sandwiches for non-burger eaters. I recommend the Philly cheese steak—it’s moist, tender and very flavorful, and there’s also ham and cheese, a turkey club and an egg salad sandwich. If you’re tired of French fries, go for the diner’s yummy onion rings or briskly selling fried zucchini (a sly way to convince yourself you’re eating “healthfully”), and if by some miracle you’ve saved room for dessert, Cookie’s offers soft-serve ice cream. Bring the kids—they’ll love Cookie’s. — Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: Be prepared to wait. Cookie’s is run by a husband and wife team (who have additional help in the busy months), and it may take a while for your food to come out.
