It would be easy to drive right past Coffee Republic, located in a cute little shopping mall on Folsom-Auburn Road, and never know about the dining pleasures that lurk within this charming neighborhood establishment. While it does serve coffee—very good coffee, in fact, and a jaw-dropping assortment of teas—it also offers a wonderful breakfast and lunch menu that is the real reason you should visit. If you arrive early, snatch one of the crusty, rich scones or the mile-high coffeecake. The kitchen also makes fresh, “old-fashioned style” oatmeal and a “sexy six” frittata, loaded with chicken, spicy sausage and three types of cheese (plus bacon and avocado, to make six) that’s marvelous. The lunch menu lists a substantial number of hot and cold sandwiches, from the rib-sticking pesto turkey melt and “oolalocious” lemon chicken sandwich (chicken and melted dill havarti cheese with citrus pepper mayonnaise) to the vegetarian “Tomacado”—tomatoes, avocado, red onions and cheddar and cream cheeses, sandwich style. Coffee Republic also knows its way around a salad—check out the hefty Thai spring apple salad, with peanut dressing, or the popular tuna-almond-Ranch salad. Tables are covered with burlap and shiny shellac, the floors are worn concrete, and a big book rack is crammed with fun things to read. There’s even an ample outdoor dining area for those lovely, warm Folsom days and evenings. It’s clear the owners have created this comfortable ambience to encourage customers to stay and lounge, not grab their grub and leave.
