editorial profile:

Chada Thai Cuisine is a wonderful example of a small, family-owned restaurant whose energy, time and talent are focused in the kitchen—with the logical result that the ambience is largely ignored. Plain and earnest, this popular eatery has pea green and mustard yellow walls, decorated with dour pictures of Thai royalty. The tables, topped with glass, feature intricate, beautiful Thai embroidery, and the curious speckled floor resembles tiny, colorful stones. A plastic fan whirs madly in the background and patrons are enveloped in lovely, enticing fragrances emanating from the kitchen. But whatever Chada is lacking in ambience is made up in spades by its excellent food. The noodle dishes are always a sure thing—try the pad see eiw, silky, wide rice noodles sautéed with soybean sauce, broccoli, cabbage and your choice of meat (or tofu)—and if you’re feeling adventurous, explore one of the restaurant’s house specialties, such as the hoy-po, steamed fresh green mussels with Thai herbs and a spicy garlic lime sauce. One of the best dishes at Chada is the Thai pumpkin and tofu green curry, a colorful and aromatic stew that includes a circus of assorted, cooked-but-still-crispy vegetables. There’s a raft of exciting salads from which to choose (don’t miss the yum nua, strips of grilled beef tossed with lemongrass, bits of onion, mint leaves and coriander with spicy lime juice), and vegetarians will be pleased by the variety of nonmeat selections. All meals come with a warm-your-toes coconut-tofu soup, dotted with green onions. — Kira O'Donnell
