editorial profile:

There never seem to be enough really good breakfast restaurants. Any eatery that can serve up a delicious plate of fried eggs and corned beef hash always seems to be crowded, especially on the weekends. Carol’s Restaurant in West Sacramento is no exception. Located on busy West Capitol Avenue, this plain and friendly restaurant fills up fast on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings, and the young waitstaff run briskly from table to table, trying to keep up with orders. Carol’s has a pretty comprehensive breakfast menu, and you will certainly find a meal that suits your fancy. Popular dishes include the San Francisco Joe “scrambler” (eggs cooked with ground beef, fresh spinach, mushrooms and onions), the blueberry pancakes, and the (no kidding) prime rib and Swiss cheese omelette. There are some frisky forays into creative breakfast fare, like the “cran nutty” waffle (a Belgian waffle with dried cranberries and chopped walnuts), but most folks we saw at Carol’s were devouring more traditional dishes, such as the home made biscuits and gravy and “whole hog” breakfast (an egg combo with your choice of ham, bacon or sausage). There are also a number of lunch items available—try the linguica sausage sandwich and the homemade chili, topped with cheese and onions. Windows in the sunny dining room are adorned with cute little coffee cup-imprinted drapes, walls are painted bright crimson and mustard, and there’s an expansive counter area with stools located at the back of the restaurant. Cheery and efficient, this West Sacramento favorite has been serving up satisfied customers since 1988. — Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: Carol’s offers several “senior plates” for folks 55 years and older. The menu characterizes the meals as “smaller portions, cheaper prices,” and seniors can order items such as a roast beef or meatloaf plate for $5.95 and a one-half sandwich and a cup of soup for $4.95.
