editorial profile:

If you’re relishing a true urban dining experience, head over to downtown’s Capitol Garage. Located on the very busy corner of 15th and K streets, this shabby-chic establishment features garishly painted, graffiti-inspired walls, concrete floors and a pretty blue mosaic tiled coffee counter. Tables are scattered throughout the smallish space and the music is loud, loud, loud. A glass display case holds a number of grab-it-and-run items like sandwiches and salads for folks in too much of a hurry to sit down at a table, and there’s also a nice selection of desserts. However, Capitol Garage also offers a full menu, and it’s an unexpectedly nice spot for a great breakfast. The Sunday brunch includes a fantastic “B.T.T.A” Benedict, eggs piled on crisp potato pancakes and topped with bacon, smoked turkey, sliced tomatoes and avocado; and Mexican food lovers will be happy to discover the breakfast tacos—three corn tortillas topped with cheddar and Jack cheeses, spicy sausage, black beans and corn, with chipotle sour cream. Lunch is a whirl of activity, and patrons who do decide to sit down can order items such as the Thai salad (which includes passion fruit, grilled prawns and spicy peanuts with a raft of vegetables and creamy cilantro lime dressing); and the popular, homey tuna melt. During dinner, patrons can elect to order from the appetizer list – try the briskly-selling nachos or the thigh-thickening beer-battered onion rings, served up with Ranch dressing and honey bourbon barbecue sauce—or plunge into the entrée section of the menu, where you’ll find items like the pan-seared mahi mahi with a coconut curry sauce; and a sauteed chicken breast parmigiana, served with linguini and garlic bread. And while the ambience is decidedly gritty and loud, children are cheerily welcomed—if you bring them for breakfast, make sure to order the “kid’s wheels”—five “silver dollar” pancakes with bacon or sausage. — Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: Capitol Garage offers a busy “Night Life” calendar—stop by on a Tuesday night for an open jazz session or Friday night for “Reggae Dance Hall.” Check website for details.
