editorial profile:
When your tummy is grumbling and you’re casting about for a restaurant to visit, I bet a card casino doesn’t come to mind as a likely candidate. And yet, there’s a casino in Sacramento with a quiet following of fans that have no interest whatsoever in Texas Hold ’em or pai gow poker. Their attraction to Capitol Casino is its café, a spare, friendly (and strikingly clean) eatery serving up robust portions of breakfast, lunch and dinner (both “American” and “Asian”) items at very refreshing prices. I heard about Capitol Casino originally as a hidden gem breakfast spot, the place to go when all the usual suspects are full. I recently found myself in that very situation one weekend, with ravenous, grumpy family members who needed to be fed—now. The mention of a casino raised a few eyebrows, but they were all too hungry to be very picky. We entered through the back of the casino (the café has its own door, but we discovered that later) and threaded our way through the entire establishment, daughter (and pink polka-dotted teddy bear) in tow. To our surprise, the café was empty—imagine that! On a Saturday morning!—and we were seated immediately. The waitress proceeded to coddle us, calling us “Angel” and “Hon,” and rapidly delivered up some tummy-pleasing breakfasts which included a California Benedict (poached eggs, bacon, avocado and tomato piled on a buttered English muffin with Hollandaise sauce) and a substantial portion of corned beef hash. The café’s menu is quite extensive—in addition to the breakfast items (which range from a “burrito con huevos” to chicken fried steak and a Belgian waffle), the kitchen also cranks out lunch and dinner items including a selection of burgers (like Mexican flavors? Try the chipotle burger, a sirloin patty topped with cheddar cheese, chipotle mayonnaise and onion “straws” on a ciabatta bun), specialty sandwiches, and entrées such as Italian sausage and spinach lasagna, housemade meatloaf and fish ‘n chips. There’s also an extensive appetizer menu for nibblers like me that includes Buffalo wings, mini burgers and a chicken quesadilla. During our meal, more families arrived, and the café was soon filled with an eclectic array of diners. Would I come back? Most definitely—next time to sample items from the kitchen’s separate Asian menu, available later in the day. — Kira O'Donnell
