editorial profile:
There are two things you should know about California Pizza Kitchen: First, it makes great pizzas, and second, it offers up a host of very tasty, non-pizza items. Sure, it’s a chain, and chains can get a bad rap, but it’s clear that CPK has figured out what people want in a pizza—and delivers it consistently. CPK customers are adventurous, ordering such intriguing pizza selections as the carne asada, a feisty combination of grilled steak, cheese and fire-roasted mild chilies, topped with fresh tomato salsa and cilantro. Other briskly selling pizzas include the “Original Barbeque Chicken,” the restaurant’s most popular pizza. Slathered with a sweetish, smoky barbecue sauce, the pizza is covered with smoked Gouda and mozzarella cheeses, chicken, sliced red onions and chopped cilantro. Try the fantastic, ultra-thin crusted “Sicilian,” piled with sweet Italian sausage, spicy Capicola ham, salami, and fontina, mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses. If you’re not a pizza fan, tuck into CPK’s excellent jambalaya, an interesting version made with linguini noodles tossed in a spicy, wake-up-your-tongue sauce and lots of blackened chicken, shrimp, Andouille sausage and Tasso ham. Salads are always hearty—don’t miss the refreshing Thai crunch salad, filled with lots of perky, fresh vegetables (shredded Napa cabbage, cucumbers, edamame, red cabbage and green onions), dotted with crispy wontons and peanuts, and laquered with a lime-cilantro dressing. The restaurant is cheery, filled with colorful pizza-box artwork, and staffed by attentive, friendly folks. And you can’t beat the location—after stuffing yourself with that pear and Gorgonzola pizza, you can waddle contentedly to the movie theater (only steps away) or launch into a no-holds-barred shopping extravaganza at Arden Fair mall. — Kira O'Donnell
Insider tip: Kids are treated like royalty at CPK, with their own special drinks (get ’em the raspberry lemonade), crayons and a multipage workbook filled with games and puzzles.
