editorial profile:

Long known for its hearty breakfast fare, Caffé Italia also cranks out generously portioned, rib-sticking Italian and American dishes for its lunch and dinner guests. But the best time to visit is in the morning (get there early on the weekend or expect to wait), where you can plunge into one of the kitchen’s famous omelettes (we counted 19 from which to choose)—try the yummy “Popeye,” filled with Swiss cheese, fresh spinach, olives and Italian sausage or bacon; or the light, custardy French toast, thickly-sliced and brightened with a touch of cinnamon. Other morning items we like are the rustic corned beef hash and the “Pocket Breakfast”—a pita pocket crammed with scrambled eggs, cheese, and two ingredients of your choice. Lunch and dinner do a brisk business as well —menu items range from a juicy, tender beef dip sandwich with housemade jus to the restaurant’s popular pizzas (don’t miss the tasty chicken and bacon Ranch pizza) and pastas. The interior resembles an indoor picnic area; the center of the room is composed of an interlocking labyrinth of booths, divided by tall wooden lattices that extend into a lattice “ceiling” Every crevice of the restaurant is crammed with homey Italian bric-a-brac: bunches of dried garlic and chile pods, colorful old olive oil tins, lovely hand-painted ceramic pieces and preserved food floating prettily in glass jars. Butcher paper covers the tables (watch out—the waiters always write their names, upside down, on the table when you arrive) if you feel like doodling before your meal arrives. — Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: If the cheddar cheese grits happen to be a dining special the day you visit, order them—celestially light, with a silky-bumpy texture, this comforting dish arrives with eggs and bacon.
