editorial profile:
For those who don’t want to don a suit or dress for dinner, but do want to eat foie gras and poached salmon, Café Rolle was made for you. It’s French food without the fancy-pants rules. Instead of white cloth, try red and white checkered and rather then dozens of utensils to decipher through your meal, there is a one spoon, one fork and—voila!—one knife. It’s a casual French restaurant with delightful food that doesn’t lag in quality. “Just because we are French doesn’t mean we always have to be so fancy,” says William Rolle, owner and chef. The menu has the usual suspects: the croque monsieur, salad Nicoise and plenty of foie gras. But the real house specialty at this charming East Sacramento eatery is salmon: Salmon salads, chilled salmon with baguettes, poached salmon and smoked salmon. Bon appetit! Cindy Arora
Insider tip: Tuesday and Wednesday’s are the best nights for a cozy dinner if you don’t want a crowd.
