editorial profile:

Amidst a sea of restaurants in midtown Sacramento, Cafe Bernardo is one of those comforting establishments where you know—you just know—you’ll get a flavorful meal that won’t put a big strain on your wallet. Consistency is the name of the game at Bernardo, one of three in the region, and the menu (which doesn’t change much) offers straightforward, nourishing breakfast, lunch and dinner menu items guaranteed to please the whole family (even the persnickety ones). The 15th Street location has an edgier, younger vibe than the other two, mostly because it’s connected to a gritty, blood red paint-splashed bar and club called R15 that features a pool table room, wide screen televisions and lots of playful bartender mixology. The cafe is airy, sunny and loud, with cheerfully upholstered, springy booths above which dangles an enormous picture frame encasing a clutch of comical, gothic-Victorian chandeliers that look like they should be hanging in Barbie’s dollhouse. Breakfast items include the earthy, spicy huevos rancheros and the indulgent, wickedly caloric Eggs Bernardo, generously drizzled with a seductive housemade hollandaise sauce. The kid in you will delight in the malted Belgian waffle, topped with a scoop of sweet toasted pecan butter; and the rib-sticking, your-mom-would-be-proud-you-ate-it oatmeal, served with cute little individual containers of sliced bananas, brown sugar and toasted pecans. Lunch and dinner items include excellent, chewy-crusted pizzas, burgers, sandwiches (try the yummy griddled ham and Jarlsberg cheese), salads and pricier entrees such as the hefty skirt steak, served with sauteed spinach and mashed potatoes. Dependable and friendly, Cafe Bernardo is an enduring favorite of Sacramento diners. — Kira O'Donnell
