editorial profile:

Located on a gritty corner on Franklin Boulevard, Caballo Blanco’s plain, unassuming exterior belies the restaurant’s captivating charms. Step inside and you’ll be flooded with warm colors, from the apricot and burnt siena painted walls and rustic tiled floors to the jaunty, striped booth upholstery and flowers which adorn all the tables. A quirky little wood overhang sprouts out of the wall above the booths, creating the illusion of eating outdoors, and grainy black and white photographs of Mexican vaqueros add a touch of the old-fashioned. The menu offers a number of hearty traditional favorites, including a huge list (we counted 20) of various item combinations, from enchiladas and tacos to tamales and burritos. Don’t miss the crusty, finger-licking carnitas—served up in big, steaming chunks, the carnitas are accompanied by tortillas, rice and beans, and an enticing salad topped with pickled jalapeno halves, radishes, and a fat slice of avocado. Other noteworthy entrées include the carne asada New York steak and the Mexican tortas, or sandwiches, stuffed with your choice of meat (steak, chicken breast or carnitas), cheese, lettuce and tomato. The restaurant also serves breakfast every morning—try the rib-sticking chorizo and eggs or the menudo, tripe soup with sliced lemon and chopped onions. You’ll find service to be friendly and efficient, and children are always treated with kindness at Caballo Blanco. — Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: The chips at Caballo Blanco are made from flour tortillas, not the more traditional corn tortillas
