editorial profile:

One of several popular eateries located in the refurbished brick retail complex at 14th and R Streets, Burgers and Brew serves up some of the city’s most creative (and hearty) burgers. Selections range from the traditional bacon cheeseburger and (not so traditional) buffalo burger—a half pound buffalo patty with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and onions—to some festive vegetarian options like the smoked tofu burger (on a wheat bun, of course) and the briskly-selling portobello mushroom burger with roasted red pepper mayonnaise. The kitchen also offers a nice selection of sandwiches, including a greasy-but-satisfying turkey avocado melt and a Philly cheese steak. There’s even a half-pound all-beef hot dog available (with cheese and onions, if you’re so inclined), though I recommend you stick with burgers when you visit. My favorite is the forget-you’re-counting-calories mushroom and onion cheeseburger, the ultimate comfort food item when you’re really, truly hungry. The interior of Burgers and Brew has the feel of a pub, with wood-paneled and brick walls, a bar located at the rear of the space, and a curious glass display case filled with beer bottles suspended above the bar area. Other quirky design features, like an amphora-style (“ I think it’s Tuscan,” remarked a puzzled friend) water fountain plopped directly in the middle of the dining space, gives the place some character, and the beer selection, as you might imagine, is very appealing. This is the second Sacramento region Burgers and Brew—the first (and original) establishment is located in Davis. — Kira O'Donnell
