editorial profile:

Sacramento’s temple of Italian kitsch, Buca di Beppo dishes up an experience like no other in the region. From the flocked-velvet walls, plastered with a dizzying gallery of black-and-white photos (don’t miss the lush, bosomy shots of a young Sophia Loren) to the gargantuan portions of rib-sticking Italian fare, this boisterous, colorful restaurant embodies the spirit of “eatertainment.” Come with a crowd—all the menu items are designed to share, family style—“small” portions serve up to three diners, “large” serve up to six. This is a place to visit when you’re ready to celebrate and toss your calorie counter out the window. Dieters won’t find much on the menu (except maybe the tasty apple-gorgonzola salad) to keep ’em slim. You have to order at least one pasta dish at Buca di Beppo—this is Italian food, after all—so I recommend the Linguine Frutti de Mare, calamari, mussels, and fat shrimp tossed with linguine in a fragrant red sauce; and, if you’re really not worried about calories, the indulgent and crowd-pleasing cheese manicotti. The chicken with lemon, dappled with capers, is another fave; as are the robust Chianti-braised short ribs. Yummy sides include the spicy and flavorful Italian broccoli Romano; and the thigh-thickening garlic mashed potatoes. If by some miracle you have room left for dessert, the restaurant offers quite a lineup, from a creamy and popular tiramisu to an apple crostata and a housemade cheesecake. This is a delightful venue to bring your extended family, the (entire) office or even a wedding party. You can’t help but have fun at this wacky and loveable restaurant. - Kira O'Donnell
