editorial profile:

If you’ve ever gone out with a group of hungry folks who are all yearning for different kinds of food, you’ll know how frustrating it can be to find the right restaurant. Take heart, however, as plucky little Boon Boon on Stockton Boulevard may well be the answer to your problem. Specializing in “global” cuisine with an “Asian flair,” this ambitious family-owned café aims to please just about everybody. It’s not often you see such a diverse array of items on a single menu—for example, Boon Boon serves up spaghetti and meatballs (recipe from “Grandma Annette,” a native of Copenhagen), chicken samosas, tuna Alfredo (a “secret recipe from France”) and Vietnamese pho (which, humorously includes meatballs in addition to the more traditional sliced beef). Diners with a Californian sensibility can tuck into Boon Boon’s olive-oil marinated grilled salmon and the chicken Caesar salad, while Thai aficionados should try the fabulous, refreshing som tum salad, grated green papaya tossed with an electric garlic-chili vinaigrette and sprinkled with roasted peanuts and chopped tomatoes. Asian dishes do dominate the menu, and a few you shouldn’t miss include the delicious chicken in green curry sauce, loaded with cushy chunks of Japanese eggplant, broccoli, bell pepper and eggplant; and the sumptuous crab fried rice. The owners have even prepared a “picture menu” in a binder so patrons can flip through and see what all the menu items look like, which I found amusing. You’ll enjoy the tidy restaurant’s cranberry-colored walls, adorned with poster-sized international stamps, and the warmly welcoming staff, who do their best to make you feel comfortable and happy. Make an effort to visit this unique establishment—you’ll be glad you did. — Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: If your sweet tooth is demanding something exotic, try Boon Boon’s wild black sweet rice with vanilla ice cream.
