editorial profile:

If the word “coffee” pops into your head when you hear “Bella Bru,” you may need to expand your thinking a bit. While Bella Bru does whip up a terrific cup of coffee, its skills have gone far beyond java and cinnamon roll production. Bella Bru’s bustling location in Natomas is a full-fledged restaurant, with a very interesting and ambitious menu that transcends the coffee house vibe with which it has been associated. The interior of the restaurant is lovely, with marble tables, warm latte and cream-colored walls, and swooping arched ceilings that evoke a Mediterranean ambience. Booths are comfy and the room is punctuated by unusual copper room dividers that add an extra dose of class to the space. You’ll find it difficult to avoid staring at the pastry cases as you order your food—the temptation is strong to eschew a square meal for a big slab of carrot cake or a slice of apple pie. But if you’re judicious, you can have it all. Breakfasts include the restaurant’s popular chorizo scramble (topped with roasted tomato salsa) and the indulgent Dungeness crab and avocado omelette; and of course there’s the sweet selections, like the intriguing cranberry walnut French toast and banana-stuffed cinnamon brioche to up that calorie count for the day. The sizeable lunch menu offers sandwiches, entrees, pizzas and salads – and ranges from a veal and mushroom meatloaf (over a Gruyère potato gratin) and a blackened mahi mahi sandwich to a Greek-inspired “Mezza plate,” piled with tzatziki, tabouleh, and hummus. Variety is the name of the game at Bella Bru, and customers like it—the place is packed at lunch. Dinner items are no less international in flavor – sample the “Exotic mushroom risotto” with sweet peas; or the Pacific Island chicken breast with pineapple-ginger soy glaze. It’s not all fancy-pants cuisine, however, you can always order up a big Bella Bru burger or plate o’ ribs (though they do come smeared with plum, lavender and whiskey barbecue sauce). If your tummy is rumbling in Natomas, Bella Bru is definitely the spot you need to visit. — Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: Grilled pizza is one specialty at Bella Bru—vegetarians shouldn’t miss the vegetable pizza, covered with spinach pesto and piled thickly with artichoke hearts, roasted peppers, caramelized onions and kalamata olives.

" My family and I have been going to this place for 4+ years. On 12/29 we took the kids and my in-laws to eat here. We got seated quick and the owner seated us and she knows who we are and when I said hi she just had attitude. The attitude also trickled down to our server! It took 10 mins for our server to get our drink order...it took another 10 minutes to get our drinks. When the waitress gave my mother in law her water, she was giving it to her from behind her chair. As she was placing it down on the table she spilled water on my mom and said to her "oh it's just water"...no sorry...no nothing. My father in law ordered a Bella Burger and he asked for fries with his order and they said they were out of fries. My two daughters ordered kids cheeseburgers. It took 30 minutes after we took our order to get our food. When the food came out the waitress dropped my husbands burger right in front of him so that took another 15 minutes to get back...this gets better both of our kids had fries on their plates when their food came out...my father in law asked for fries again and they told him AGAIN they were still out...he was confused as to why fries were on his granddaughters plates and they were still telling him that they were out..we all were!! My kids took a few bites from their burgers and they were still raw inside. I walked over to the back where the "owner" was standing and showed them. She handed me a plate where she took the burgers and said they will be coming out shortly. Shortly came around and they brought the same burgers that had bites on it and gave it back to our kids...I was just taken back that they did not make new burgers, they had just taken the the eaten burgers and threw them back on the grill...that is so gross! When the bill came, it was around $95.00, we paid and we refused to leave a tip. I am pretty bummed out about this since it was one of the "nicest" restaurants in Natomas and they have an award from the Sacramento Magazine. Overall I do not recommend. This is not the first time we've had bad service at this place, but this was by far the worst service I've ever received. No sorry, no discount on our meal, the owner did not even bother to come over and apologize to us. GO TO MALIBAR down the street. "
