editorial profile:
Although Sacramento and beach life are not synonymous, at the Beach Hut Deli—amongst the water misters and surfboards—you can close your eyes (really hard) and pretend. The sandwich shack in Midtown is a casual eatery where sun, surf and sandwiches are peddled with panache. The Beach Hut has every kind of sandwich imaginable, including the Surfin Cow (roast beef, avocado and bacon), the Beach Meatball Sub and the Pig Kahuna (luau-style pulled pork). You can also design your own or order hot dogs, sandwiches, hotdogs, nachos and beers on tap. The décor is kitschy with bamboo, grassy fringe and surf life caricaturized on the restaurant walls. The staff is friendly, young, and loyal to the Beach Hut, claiming it is the “best happy hour anywhere.” They may have something—happy hour runs 4 p.m. to close every day. On a balmy summer night snake a seat underneath a water mister and order a tall boy (liter of beer.) Cindy Arora
