editorial profile:
Life can be chaotic. When we feel overwhelmed, food can be a great comfort, especially when it’s paired with a soothing environment. If you’re seeking a peaceful and restorative dining experience, head to Andy Nguyen’s on Broadway. This no-frills bastion of Buddhist-inspired vegetarian cuisine exudes mellowness, from its nod-inducing New Age background music to the names of the menu items, such as the “Wish Fulfilling Jewel” soup, the “Generating Compassion” soy ribs (yes, soy ribs) and the “Good Karma Sampler.” If you are a passionate carnivore, you’re just going to have to subdue your grumbling and get adventurous, because the only meat you’ll find on this menu is, well, non-meat. However, menu items are exuberantly fresh-tasting and flavorful, and introduce a few ingredients many of us rarely see. (How often do you eat soy “pork” chops or soy “chicken” drumsticks?) Most dishes showcase an abundance of vegetables, embellished with brightly-flavored herbs, sauces and vinaigrettes. Tofu is a big player at Andy Nguyen’s, as are mushrooms and noodles, and it pops up in a number of yummy dishes. The fragrant “Supreme Noodle” soup, for example, showcases chunks of tofu in a spicy lemongrass broth with shiitake mushrooms and mixed vegetables, and the “Wisdom Fire Pot,” which patrons cook at their table, is composed of assorted soy meats, mushrooms, tofu and mustard greens. Don’t miss the excellent “Enlighten Mind” rolls, stuffed with grilled tofu, shiitake mushrooms and fresh herbs (including mint leaves)—so refreshing, they’re like a shower for your palate. Another palate-sparkler is the Eight-Fold Path, spring greens tossed with onions, tomatoes, mint and cilantro in a light sesame dressing. Our advice? Simply relax into your chair with a glass of the restaurant’s excellent Thai iced tea (made with soy milk, not condensed milk) and feel the love. — Kira O'Donnell
