In a place where the house special is pork chops with applesauce, it seems natural for the overall atmosphere to be homey and comfortable. 4th Street Grille—on the edge of downtown and just a stones throw from Old Sacramento—has the interesting dichotomy of appearing upscale, but feeling like a neighborhood diner. The family-run restaurant offers a menu that straddles fine-dining cuisine and bar food, with dishes such as garlic fries, mac and cheese (smoked ham, peas, cheddar and fontina cheese), grilled lamb chops and a wild salmon filet (made with honey ginger glaze and a wasabi crema). The full baroffers specialty cocktails, a decent wine list and coffee drinks to pair up with one of the chef’s daily desserts. Parking can be a bear here—such is dining in downtown—but park along Fifth Street and bring quarters if you arrive before 6 p.m. Cindy Arora
